Sailor's collar
By Captain Corsaire Originally, the stripes were to identify sailors and to distinguish them from the captain of the boat! It is also said that it helped spotting a sailor fallen at sea. There are paintings as far back as 1820 showing sailors wearing stripes. By law the hard working sailor had to wear the stripy top which had to have 21 blue and 21 white stripes, the white ones were 2cm wide and the blue ones 1cm. At the end of the 19th century the white and blue stripes symbolised the seaside holiday and stripes were everywhere in France: clothes, towels, deck chairs and even the small beach huts of the 1950's! In 1960 Coco Chanel wears a stripy t-shirt and it becomes "chic" overnight. In the 1980 Jean-Paul Gautier, another French designer uses the stripy t-shirt on the cat walk! click here for children stripy T-shirts
